Batavus, owened by the Accell Group, was the leading manufacturer of bicycles and mopeds in the Netherlands during the 1970s. Mr Andries Gaastra opened a shop in 1904 selling clocks and small farm machinery but within two years he started selling bicycles which were manufactured by a German company called Presto. However he soon started selling bicycles under his own brand, making quite a name for himself!. Batavus was the official supplier to the Dutch cycling union and received quite a recognition when in the 1992 Olympics Leontien Van Moorsel won the Tour Feminin riding a Batavus bicycle. Batavus started manufacturing mopeds under licence in 1972 and in 1977 the company made more bicycles and mopeds than any other company in the Netherlands!
The Uk first became familiar with the Bavatus in 1973 when two former BSA executives Wilf Harrison and Peter Glover imported the Bavatus mopeds into the UK and Ireland.
