Based in Bolton, Lancashire Armstrong CCM Motorcycles was a British manufacturer. It was in 1971 that Alan Clews formed CCM from BSA’s off-road leftovers and bought spares to produce motorcycles making this into a succesful business. The Bolton factory was established in 1981 and Armstrong bought a majority share holding. Clews designed a road race competition motorbike and the company also acquired the rights to the Rotax engine enduro motorcycle SWM XN Tornado from the Italian owners and then developed the famous Armstrong MT500 which was used by the British Army in the Falklands war! Armstrong CCM continued to be succesful for most of the 1980s producing trials and motorcross bikes as well as military off-road machines.
In 1983 Armstorng-CCM joined forces with a Canadian Company and so began the production of the Can-Ams and these were produced right up to 1987 when Armstrong sold the military motorcycle business to Harley Davidson and the Road Racing department including plans, left over stock as well as manufaturing rights were sold to Colin Gopper of CWH Developments.
