Ariel, the make that we all know and love was started by two partners James Starley and William Hillman in the 1870’s. Hillman later became better know for his cars after he left company in 1872. Starley continued in this trade as well as setting speed records. The first motorcycle produced by Airiel, in 1902, had a Kerry engine with a float carburettor and an innovative magneto ignition. Starley was joined by his sons in the business and registered Ariel as a trade name in the early 1980’s which is when they started producing a limited amount of cycles. This British motorcycle manufacturer was based in Birmingham and was one of the Britain’s leading innovators in Motorcycling. The company was sold to BSA in 1944 and sadly the name was discontinued in 1970.
