AJW Motorcycles Ltd, named after Arthur John Wheaton, was a British company established in 1928 and based in Exeter. AJW produced several bikes with the name ‘fox’ – Grey Fox, Silver Vixen, Silver Fox, Vixen, Speed Fox and Flying Vixen to name just a few however the best known AJW motorcycles are the Grey Fox and the Red Panther. AJW motorcycles were top of the range well made machines and their prices reflected this. Limited production of these machines meant they were also exclusive although the company survived the great depression of the 1930’s however in 1937 the company was sold and production stopped completely for the whole of World War II. After the war the company changed hands again twice. The last motorcycle produced by AJW was the 125cc Fox cub in 1953. The 48cc Fox Cub was sold right up to 1964. AJW then became importers of 500cc and 125cc Italian two stroke Wolfhound motorcycles with AJW branding of course. Sadly this great company ceased trading in 1981 although AJW motorcycles are still greatly desired and admired even today!
